Community and Celebration: PPHA at NAMIWalks Austin

Written by: Laura Howard, PPHA Board of Director
If you haven’t been to a NAMIWalk, it is an amazing experience. It’s a celebration of the strength of individuals and the Austin community as we come together to support one another, provide mental health education and resources, and fight to end stigma against mental illness. On September 24, over 1,800 people and organizations gathered at The Long Center to celebrate mental health and each other. The Pregnancy and Postpartum Health Alliance of Texas was proud to be a part of the party!

For the third year in a row, PPHA had a resource table at NAMIWalks Austin. Board of Directors Donna Kreuzer and Laura Howard talked with community members about perinatal mood disorders, our PPHA programs, and offered information on local resources for moms and families. We love getting to meet and learn from the people at events like the NAMIWalk.

This year’s NAMIWalk program featured Mayor Steve Adler and City Council member Sheryl Cole talking about Austin’s commitment to mental health education and care. Mix 94.7 radio host Jay Styles and former NFL player Darrell Green shared their own personal stories, and inspired us with their courage and compassion.

Before the walk began, walkers enjoyed a yoga class, a Zumba class, refreshments and pet therapy. The local mental health nonprofits represented along with PPHA included Austin Clubhouse, PLAN of Central Texas, Mental Health Channel, and more. PPHA is proud to be a part of the Austin mental health community, and we look forward to attending NAMIWalks Austin again next year!
